Urinalysis - Ascorbic acid
Introduction
Urinary excretion of ascorbic acid amounts to 20-30 mg daily. Urinary excretion of ascorbic acid depends on daily intake of vitamin C (an average daily dose is 30-80 mg). The stability of ascorbic acid in urine is very low, therefore only small amounts of ascorbic acid are found in 24-hour urine.
The level of ascorbic acid in urine is important for its interference with the tests for glucose, blood and bilirubin.
| Analyte | Concentrations of ascorbic acid that influence at the result | | SI units | Conventional units | | Glucose | > 2839 µmol/L | > 50 mg/dl | | Blood | > 2271 µmol/L | > 40 mg/dl | | Bilirubin | > 1420 µmol/L | > 25 mg/dl |
In case of a positive test strip result for ascorbic acid, the analysis should be repeated after 24 hours, during which period the patient should not take vitamin C.
