Urinalysis - Nitrite
Introduction
The most common causes of genitourinary tract infections are Escherichia coli, Proteus, Klebsiella, Salmonella, enterococci, staphylococci and Pseudomonas. In the urinary bladder, these bacteria reduce nitrates to nitrites. A positive reaction to nitrites indicates genitourinary tract infection, and produces discoloration from white through pink to red. The first morning urine should be used for analysis, and testing should be performed within 4 hours. A false negative result is obtained when the urine contains a low number of bacteria, or when they have been in contact with nitrates for too short a period of time.
