Urinalysis - Specific gravity
Introduction
Determination of urine specific gravity has a great diagnostic value for evaluation of the concentration capacity of the kidneys. Specific gravity of the urine depends on urine volume and urinary concentration of dissolved substances. The normal values of urine specific gravity range from 1.015 to 1.025, which is a relative ratio between urine density and water density, thus it is a dimensionless number. As the kidneys are capable of diluting or concentrating the urine, as needed, the values of urine specific gravity may range from 1.002 to 1.040. During the day, the kidneys eliminate about 60 g of solid substance from the body.
